The Client

Libraro is a UK-based platform dedicated to empowering emerging writers by giving them a space to publish and share their work with readers. The platform allows authors to build visibility and track engagement, helping their books gain traction in a competitive landscape.

As writers grow their readership, publishers on the platform can discover and connect with top-rated talent, making Libraro a powerful bridge between undiscovered authors and the publishing industry.

Laying the Technical Foundation

For Libraro, we partnered closely with their team and a fellow design agency to bring the platform to life. Starting with frontend development in Next.js and building out a robust backend in Node.js, our focus was on delivering a high-performance, secure, and scalable experience for both readers and writers.

The project demanded an intensive infrastructure setup due to its integration with the BSV blockchain, used to timestamp and secure every book published on the platform. This added a layer of transparency and ownership protection critical to Libraro’s mission of supporting emerging writers.

To support this complexity, we architected a multi-service AWS environment. Before moving into full-scale development, we invested significant effort into security, infrastructure reliability, and DevOps automation to ensure a stable and trusted platform foundation.

Key Features of the Platform

The Libraro platform is designed to serve three core user types—readers, writers, and publishers, each with a tailored set of features that fosters engagement, transparency, and security.

Users can sign up and create profiles based on their role. Writers can buy credits and publish books or chapters, with each submission timestamped on the BSV blockchain, ensuring proof of authorship and content integrity. This blockchain-backed system prevents intellectual property theft, giving writers full control and visibility over their work.

Readers have the ability to read, comment, like, and save books, as well as follow authors, creating a community-driven reading experience. On the other hand, publishers are given access to comprehensive analytics and author performance stats, helping them discover and connect with emerging talent.

To maintain content quality and safety, we integrated AI-powered moderation tools that scan for harmful or inappropriate content, as well as detect AI-generated material, helping Libraro stay compliant and trustworthy.

Infrastructure Breakdown

Libraro is built on a secure, scalable cloud infrastructure, leveraging a wide range of AWS services and blockchain integration to support its publishing ecosystem.

AWS Cognito handles user authentication, while Secrets Manager, KMS, and Parameter Store ensure secure credential and data management. Content is stored on Amazon S3 and delivered globally via CloudFront, with SES managing transactional emails.

To protect author rights, all content is timestamped on the BSV blockchain via Asset Layer API, and the HandCash wallet enables credit-based transactions for users. AI capabilities have been integrated to automatically detect harmful or inappropriate content, and to flag AI-generated material, ensuring content integrity, platform trust, and compliance. These tools support moderation and help maintain a safe space for both readers and creators.

Data operations are powered by RDS for structured storage, DynamoDB for high-speed NoSQL data, Redis/ElastiCache for caching, and Google BigQuery for analytics.

The platform runs on ECS with Docker, supported by Load Balancing, EC2, VPC, and monitored via CloudWatch and CloudTrail. A custom Lambda-based Convert Module handles file transformations using tools like Puppeteer-Core and EditorJS-HTML, enabling smooth EPUB and Editor.js generation.

This setup ensures reliability, performance, and future-ready scalability across all aspects of the platform.

The Outcome

Following the successful launch of the platform, Libraro quickly gained traction, validating its vision of empowering emerging writers and connecting them with readers and publishers. The platform’s strong technical foundation and seamless user experience played a pivotal role in securing its second round of funding, contributing to a total raise of over £3 million to date.

With a growing user base, publisher interest, and a scalable infrastructure in place, Libraro continues to expand, establishing itself as a transformative force in the publishing industry.
